Basics of Free Motion Quilting

Discover the fun and freedom of quilting your own projects with free motion. Learn how to set up your machine, move your quilt and tackle tension issues while learning basic designs like loops, leaves, swirls, paisley and more.

A fabric and batting 'sandwich' will be provided for class.

You will also need:

  • Your machine with foot pedal, power cord, etc. all in good working order. A free motion quilting or darning foot is needed.
  • Quality thread in two contrasting colors to better adjust tension. (We recommend our Glide thread).
  • Machine needle: 90/14 universal.
  • An extension table for your machine will give you the best range of motion. Bring it if you have one. (Interested in ordering one? Talk to us. There is a 3-4 week delivery time as the table is custom cut for your machine.)
  • Quilting gloves (Machingers are our favorite)
  • Sew Slip mat is strongly advised.
  • Scissors or thread snips, pen/pencil, notebook.

Make sure to read the class requirements
so you have the tools and supplies to help you get the best class experience.

This is a single session in-person class at Sew Simple of Lynchburg and is limited to 6 students, so sign up fast to save your spot.

We do not recommend renting a machine for this class unless you have one of our bigger machines and would rather rent than to lug in your machine, assuming we have a floor model of that model available. Please contact us to arrange this.

Free motion quilting really relies on getting to know the sounds of your machine, tension adjustments, and your own machine set up at home, so it's best to use your own machine.

Note: Cancellations made after 48 hours prior to class cannot be refunded. You can arrange for someone else to come in your place, but otherwise there are no exceptions to this policy.
